Description

During the Winter of 1981-2 the Wessex Archaeological Committee excavated a section through the northern ditch of the Saxon burh defences during the development of Sainsbury's car park, Christchurch ( site W23). The ditch was revealed to have a round bottomed, splayed -U profile, 2.2m deep and 4.4m wide at the top. The upper layers of the fill contained lenses of charcoal and building debris. No dating evidence was recovered but it is suggested that the building debris may relate to the destruction of the medieval town wall in the 12th-13th centuries.
