Description
During December 1974-January 1975 a rescue excavation in advance of development was directed by M. Fox for Poole Museums on the site of the Dolphin Development, Church Street, Chrischurch. This involved a trial trench (site X11.1), a main excavation (site X11.3) and a watching brief with salvage excavation and recording (site X11.2).
The watching brief and salvage excavation revealed two early-medieval pits and three later medieval pits and a large number of post-medieval and undated features.
Several stone features were excavated including a stone lined drain sealed by a 16th century layer, an associated rectangular stone structure [F24], possibly a large stone lined pit or a small stone building of possible late medieval date. In the north corner of the site a line of 15th-16th century post holes was recorded close to three superimposed gravel surfaces, possibly a road or market area.
