Description

During December 1974-January 1975 a rescue excavation in advance of development was directed by M Fox for Poole Museums on the site of the Dolphin Development, Church Street. This involved a trial trench (site X11.1), a main excavation (site X11.3) and a watching brief with salvage excavation and recording (site X11.2). The trial trench measured approximately 7.2m NE-SW x 3.9m and was located in the garden to the rear of the Dolphin Hotel, Church Street. Excavation showed that the site had been levelled in the 16th century and that there were no features earlier than the 13th century. 13th-15th century pits, post-hole, robber trench and compacted sand layer were identified. Two 15th-16th century clay layers, two 17th-18th century brick walls, pits and an undated gully were among the post-medieval features identified.
