Description

P. Aitken directed a small excavation in 1973 c. 4m NE of site X15 in Sainsbury's car park, Christchurch, Dorset. This revealed post-medieval loam and an undated gully which was also recorded in the Sainsbury's watching brief. Observations during contractor's work SE of site X10 in c. 1974 by P. Aitken and M. Tizzard temporarily revealed a gravel spread c. 5m wide bounded by small ditches. This was interpreted as a road and the probable alignment was from site X8 to site X10. Excavations on site X12 and site X10 have failed to establish whether a road existed and the gravel is probably the bank of ditch B.
