Description

Christopher Sparey Green observed the construction of the Tudor Arcade in 1957. In a stanchion pit in NW corner of the shop on the south side of the South Street frontage, a layer of of grey-brown chalky soil about 1.2-1.5m deep, which contained 1st century AD samian pottery, including some mid-1st century AD types, was found immediately overlying the natural chalk. At the northeast corner of the same building, a pit was found cut into what was probably natural chalk. A 3rd century AD child's copper alloy penannular bracelet was recovered from the spoil tip.
