Description

Fragments of a Roman mosaic were encountered during the digging of the grave for Martha Brown, who was executed on 9 August 1856, in the old Prison burial ground. Part of the outer border of a tessellated floor was found. This was the same mosaic floor as that subsequently encountered during the digging of the grave for James Seal in 1858 and excavated by Lawrance, which had a central panel of two entwined hearts (1) (2) (3).
