Description

A full survey and analysis of The Chantry was undertaken by K A Rodwell in 1987, prior to and during restoration in 1987. The interior was recorded by measured survey and the visible fabric was analysed before restoration work began, with further details recorded as they became exposed. The north, west and east external elevations were recorded photogrammetrically. The structural evidence was recorded on plan and a series of nine elevations. On the basis of the structural evidence, four structural periods have been determined. Period 1 probably dates to the late 13th or early 14th century and was probably a municipal building, with a low pitched parapeted roof with a cresset mounted on the south wall, possibly as a beacon associated with Bridport Harbour. Period 2 is dated to the second half of the 14th century and is associated with the conversion of the building into a chantry priest’s house, with the addition of an attic incorporating a columbarium. Much of the present form of the building dates to this period. Period 3 is largely restricted to internal alterations of 16th century date. Period 4 represents later 19th century alterations and restorations.
