Description
'About twenty years ago [c.1850] in digging for stone in this field [north of the churchyard] near the hedge, the remains of what was supposed to be a sepulchral chapel or shrine were discovered, and under them a coffin containing the skeleton of a person of very slender make, apparently a female. This monument appeared to have stood between two pillars at the west end of the church. What remained had been richly carved and gilt. All that could be made out of the inscription was " Cujus anime Deus propicietur, Amen" in the old black letter; but nothing further was discovered. These fragments are still preserved in the Abbey House. Some coffins with effigies of monks were discovered near the same spot; but the workmen were not permitted to examine what they contained and the ground was immediately closed.' [1]
