Description

The Shaftesbury and District Archaeological Group undertook observations in St Peter's Church during the removal of plaster and re-laying floors in the north aisle in 1977. A large quantity of sandstone statuary fragments was recovered, exposed during restoration work to the east wall of the north aisle. The fragments were both gilded and painted, and said to be of late medieval date. The east and north walls of the aisle are of fifteenth-century date. The group carried out conservation treatment [1]. The report indicates that a photographic record was made, but its present whereabouts are not known, and that a more detailed report is to follow [1].
