Description

A Late neolithic or Early Bronze Age pit was discovered whilst digging a grave at the Mampitts Lane Cemetery near Shaftesbury in December 1949. 'There is some record of a previous discovery of a similar nature in the same graveyard'. A complete cross section was exposed showing the pit to be relatively shallow with a flat bottom and near vertical sides. N Teulon Porter subsequently excavated the undisturbed half for the Shaftesbury and District Historical Society. [1]
