Description

AC Archaeology conducted an archaeological evaluation in advance of proposed redevelopment on land at the former Church of England First School, Mampitts Road, Shaftesbury during September 2007. 'The evaluation comprised eleven trenches totaling 165m in length, each trench 1.8m wide and representing a 2% sample of the proposed development area. Archaeological activity was limited to two trenches (6 and 7) and included two linear features appearing to represent former boundary ditches, one of which contained pottery of medieval date. Only a small quantity of artefacts was recovered from the topsoil of some of the remaining trenches, including ceramic building material and pottery of post-medieval date, and a single flint core of probable late neolithic date'.
