Description

An archaeological watching brief was carried out by Terrain Archaeology on the 15th January 2001. Its objective is to evaluate the archaeological potential of the site, appraise its nature level of preservation and importance of archaeological deposits. A single machine trench was dug measuring 5m by 1.5m (approximately 15% of the proposed area of development), using a wheeled JCB with a toothless grading bucket, and was located by taped measurements. This was machined down to the top of natural deposits. The sides and bottom were hand cleaned using trowels, and deposits and features were recorded. No finds were recovered, and no archaeology was encountered during the evaluation. The presence of there modern plough marks, and the lack of any archaeological deposits suggests that any shallow features have been removed, though larger features may have survived further down.
