Description

Michael Heaton Heritage Consultants carried out a building survey across the site in order to record the industrial archaeological remains, at the bequest of Chelverton Deely Freed and Tesco Stores Plc. This is in response to a condition on planning permission from Portland Borough Council. Data was collected from pertinent sources, including The National Monuments Record Centre, the British Geological Survey, the Dorset History Centre, the British Library as well as private libraries and the local people. Cartographic regression analysis was undertaken back to the earliest possible maps, being the tithes survey maps of 1840. The site was visited during August 2003, and again in March 2010 for visual inspections. Various industrial buildings were recorded on site including the Tramway tunnel, various retaining walls, chimney stack, and notably the stone saw mill and the Lower Yard main works building. Construction of the surviving buildings consists of concrete or concrete blocks. A notable characteristic of the site is that each of the buildings is oriented in respect to the boundaries of the 18th century allotments, mapped on the Tithes Survey of 1840, despite an alternative orientation being more appropriate for the movement and processing of blocks of stone
