Description
Context One Archaeological Services Ltd was commissioned by Wessex Water to carry out a watching brief at Wardon Hill, during works for 300m of pipeline to be laid.
The replacement trench was dug using a machine equipped with a 0.4m wide toothless bucket, and was excavated to a maximum depth of 1.2m and width of 0.5m. Three pre-development test pits spread along the proposed pipeline were hand excavated to a maximum depth of between 0.3m and 0.7m. These were also checked for archaeological evidence.
During the monitoring process, evidence was found for an undated possible road surface lying adjacent to the modern A37. no dating evidence has been identified to confirm or refute this, and no other finds or features were identified during the monitoring process.
