Description

Bournemouth Archaeology carried out a watching brief at the southern edge of Canford Heath, during the installation of a water pipeline. The site lies within a Site of Special Scientific Interest, is part of the Dorset Heathlands Special Protection Area, and is also a Special Area of Conservation. These designations, as well as a barrow being particularly close to the route, add to the sensitivity required in this work. This comprehensive watching brief required an archaeologist to be present during all groundworks which took place within 10m of the barrow. A machine digger with a 1m toothed bucket excavated a 0.5m wide trench, which passed within 15m of the centre of the barrow. No finds or features were found during the watching brief.
