Description

AC Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation on the area of a proposed sports field in Milborne St Andrew. The evaluation consisted of three trenches which were machine excavated. Topsoil was removed by the mechanical excavator until natural subsoil or intact archaeological deposits were reached. Trenches 1 and 2 measured 10m by 1.5m, and Trench 3 measured 25m by 1.5m. No archaeological finds or features were found in Trench 1, which had a final depth of 250mm. A single archaeological feature was located in Trench 2, which was excavated to 300mm. A roughly north-south aligned linear feature measuring 800mm wide, was present at the western end of the trench, likely a ditch, with a maximum depth of 800mm. No dating evidence was found in the fill of this feature however. Trench 3, which went to a depth of 300mm, contained a service trench and part of a pit, but both of these were considered to be of probable 20th century date.
