Description

Wessex Archaeology carried out an archaeological survey at Burton in the form of a field walking survey followed by a watching brief. This was done during the construction of a pumping station for Wessex Water. Field walking took place using a 5m grid laid on the national grid, and each hectare was then divided into collection units. This took place in generally good weather conditions, though the height of crops averaged 100-150mm, reducing visibility. The major categories of finds were worked flint, burnt flint, and pottery and ceramic material. The watching brief observed the removal of topsoil by machine excavation using toothed buckets. The surface was then machine cleaned with a small bulldozer. No archaeological features were identified during the watching brief, and no finds were retained, though a few worked flints were noted.
