Description
Exeter Archaeology carried out a documentary survey on Chard Junction Quarry, due to a proposed extension development. The assessment consisted of a documentary review of all sources relating to the archaeology of the area at the Dorset Record Office, and a preliminary inspection of the site to identify previously unknown archaeology. Other sources consulted include the Devon and Dorset Sites and Monuments Records, West Country Studies Library, Dorchester reference Library, various historical maps and aerial photographs at the Dorset SMR.
As a result of the assessment, two aspects of archaeological importance requiring clarification are; the presence or absence of later prehistoric or Roman remains in the proposed extension area, and the likelihood that Palaeolithic material of considerable importance exists within the gravels to be extracted. A course of surveying including geophysical, field walking and a watching brief has been suggested in advance of further development.
