Description
Lindsey Archaeological Services conducted an archaeological desk based assessment of land at South Street/ Ludbourne Road, Sherborne during 1997 in advance of re-development of the site as Sainsbury’s Supermarket.
The development area lies on the site of the medieval St. Andrew’s mill given to the monks of Sherborne abbey in the 12th century by the bishop of Salisbury. The mill leat was only filled in after WWII and the mill is documented until 1814 when it was converted to the production of silk. Elements of the silk mill have probably been incorporated into the modern engineering works.
However, modern groundwork associated with the Wincanton Engineering works has reduced the potential for undisturbed archaeological remains.
