Description

Bournemouth University undertook a geophysical survey of an 80m x 100 m area in the NW corner of the site of the former Pilkington Tiles Factory site on the 29th and 30th November 1999. A one metre reading interval Geoscan FM36 fluxgate gradiometer survey was conducted over an area of 80m by 100m of former allotment garden. The Aim of the survey was to establish the line and extent of a large ditch discovered during an archaeological evaluation by Terrain Archaeology. (1) (2) Field observation and the recorded instrument data indicated a highly contaminated site. Despite the levels of contamination, it was possible to pick up a linear anomaly about 55 m long which ran parallel but further west of the ditch found during the evaluation. This was identified as another possible ditch. No further archaeological features were picked up due to the heavy contamination of the soil.
