Description
An evaluation comprising the excavation and recording of four trial trenches, approximately a 2% sample of the area of the proposed development. The trenches were excavated using mechanical plant with a toothless bucket. The trenches were located to cross the positions of buildings shown on the 1901 Ordnance Survey map and the Verwood tithe map of 1847, and to test apparently blank areas. Though several features were present, their date and character was uncertain. With the exception of one post hole, which may have related to former buildings on the site, the investigation revealed no evidence for kilns or other pottery industry related activity on the site, though quantities of pottery were found. It was clear that there had been extensive disturbance cross much of the site.
