Description
Cotswold Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of the route of the proposed Corfe Mullen to Salisbury Water Transfer Scheme between July and December 2012. A total of 47 trenches were excavated in Dorset.
Trench 100 was located to the south east of Tarrant Keyneston village on the parish boundary between Shapwick and Tarrant Keyneston. It measured 15m by 1.8m. It was positioned to evaluate geophysical anomalies 260 and 261, positive linear anomalies running parallel in a NNW-SSE direction. A large ditch (100002) which corresponded to geophysical anomaly 260 was partially excavated. It measured about 5m wide and perhaps up to 2.2m deep. It was not excavated to its full depth and its overall profile is not known. The earthwork remains of a bank survive on the SSW side of this ditch along the field boundary. The upper fills of the ditch included eroded bank material and layers of silting and stabilisation. Post-medieval and modern material was found in the upper part of the ditch. No trace of geophysical anomaly 261 was identified in the trench. [1] [2]
The record for this event has been created with support from Wessex Water.
