Description

Monitoring consisted of the excavation of three trial holes in advance of the excavation of a c.70m long trench for the laying of multiple service ducts inside The Cobb and subsequent observation of the duct works and later repairs to storm damage. The recording included two earlier stone surfaces of the causeway dated as 1834 and 1857 with evidence of earlier phases of building and a culvert which was re-connected to a beach drain within the inner harbour wall. A World War Two concrete base, previously thought to be an anti-tank barrier, was removed, measured as 0.25m deep and reinterpreted as part of a small arms protection barrier.
