Description

Evaluation comprising excavation and recording of eight machine-excavated trenches located to investigate anomalies or areas of magnetic disturbance seen in geophysical survey. All eight trenches revealed evidence of archaeological activity, predominantly linear features interpreted as probable boundary ditches and drainage gullies. A small number of discrete features suggested domestic activity in the vicinity, though there was no direct evidence in the form of buildings or other types of structure. Artefacts recovered included pottery dating from the 11th to 13th centuries and a significant assemblage of faunal remains including butchered animal bone. Two features in Trench 1 contained small quantities of Romano-British pottery. Post-medieval activity in the form of 18th to 19th-century quarrying was seen in Trench 2.
