Description
Dendrochronological analysis conducted between 2004 and 2008 of 189 timbers which had been inconclusive in terms of dating and of the timber sources was considered. The only timber (number 19) containing sapwood had seven samples subjected to radiocarbon dating analysis. It was not possible to derive an exact felling date as the timber origin was unknown and therefore had no comparator. An estimate provided by the wiggle-match suggested that the vessel dated from and sank in the late fifteenth century to early sixteenth. This accorded well with the analysis of the boat and its ballast and its cargo of Spanish ceramics made at Seville at the beginning of the sixteenth century.
