EDO6134 - Maiden Castle west gate, Winterborne St Martin; watching brief 2017

Monitoring and recording of a wooden gate post replacement at the western entrance to Maiden Castle, an area not previously subject to archaeological investigation. No archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were observed. No evidence was seen for the edge of the rampart bank to the south extending to this point. It appeared that archaeological levels associated with the original gateway to the hillfort had been removed by erosion.
