Description

Archaeological evaluation of site proposed for housing development, comprising the machine excavation of two trenches equivalent to a 2% sample of the site. Both trenches were 1.6m wide and 20m long, and were dug to the top of natural geology which varied between 0.5m and 0.8m deep. In both trenches there was a friable very dark brown silty clay topsoil around 0.2m deep with occasional angular gravel and Portland Stone fragments, over a firm yellowish-brown clay around 0.2m deep with occasional Portland Stone fragments. Natural geology was solid light grey platy Portland Stone bedrock. No features or deposits of archaeological interest were observed, and there were no finds.
