Description
Excavation by machine of two trenches immediately to the west of the existing sports centre in connection with a proposed extension to the building. Trench locations were selected to target parts of the site that appeared to be undisturbed; the presence of a gas main and overhead cables necessitated re-orientation and shortening. Trench 1 measured 15m by 1.3m and Trench 2 was 20m by 1.3m. Topsoil was removed along the proposed route of an electric cable, and three short parts of the route of the cable were excavated to test the deposits around the edges of the development area. Between 200 and 250mm of topsoil was observed, becoming deeper towards the top of the slope. No archaeological features or deposits were seen.
