Description

A watching brief was undertaken during the groundworks carried out at the site due to the potential for archaeological deposits from the medieval period. Two areas were designated for the watching brief in which surfaces, deposits and structures revealed by groundworks were recorded. The scope of this watching brief included a soakaway trench excavated to a final depth of 1.7 m below current ground level with the base of the trench sitting at 0.05 AOD. During excavation of the reclamation dumps a minimum of 50 litres of each context was taken for finds recovery. The brief also included observation of works in the courtyard, but limited to ground reduction in the area of the Bistro and a number of shallow service trenches.
