EDO6317 - Former Post Office, 67 St Thomas Street, Weymouth; watching brief 2017

Observations and recording of groundworks for foundations of new load-bearing walls. Three trenches were dug by machine to over 1.8m through unstable made ground, which restricted the archaeologists to recording without entering the trenches. In Trenches 1 and 2 and the southern part of Trench 3 there was extensive modern disturbance in the form of cuts for the building of the post office, and foundations and cellars associated with earlier phases of the building, and other foundations of brick dating to the late 1800s. A small area in Trench 1, between the cuts of various cellars, appeared to have potential for survival of earlier deposits. A pit was recorded, but no dating evidence found. Archaeological features and deposits survived in the northern part of Trench 3. There appeared to be a lined circular pit or well and a stone wall. This area collapsed before any dating evidence could be recovered.
