Description

Excavation and watching brief was undertaken to the east of Hill Farm, Iwerne Minster, as part of the Wessex Water Corfe Mullen to Salisbury water transfer scheme archaeological mitigation. Three Early Neolithic pits were excavated, filled with probable domestic refuse including pottery, charcoal, fired clay and flint debitage. The worked flint suggests that a range of tool types were being created from axes to scrapers. A number of later Iron Age features were found, mainly postholes, which possibly formed either a fence line or the remains of a truncated round house. A range of undated features were found including drainage gullies, isolated post holes and two broad irregular features of unclear nature. Two ditches, probably field boundary ditches of Romano-British date were also recorded.
