Description

Observations and recording during work for re-purposing the building as a visitor centre. Observations in the cellar, lift shaft and trial pits identified four foundation piers, relieving arches and a large pit which was probably a latrine associated with the 19th-century use of the building. The pit had been filled with early- to mid-19th century rubbish. This confirms evidence from earlier work suggesting that building of the 1797 Shire Hall and earlier Shire Hall buildings on the site had removed any evidence of the Roman or medieval town.
