Description
An evaluation comprising the excavation of a trench 1m by 10m oriented approximately east-west and situated towards the north-eastern end of the field. Turf removal revealed a deep, stone-free soil containing medieval/post-medieval finds and occasional worked flints, over a more stony horizon. Below this was a substantial wall footing corresponding with an earthwork. It was about 1.3m wide with a flat top, and built of un-bonded stone, mostly greensand-derived chert; stony layers to the west of the wall were interpreted as tumble from the wall. A cut feature interpreted as a probable pit was partly exposed. Pottery from the surface of the pit was of 12/13th-century date. A lens of dark soil close to the eastern edge of the wall contained sherds from a cooking pot of 12/13th-century date.
