Description

An archaeological assessment was commissioned by Pegasus Planning Group on behalf of Persimmon Homes (South Coast) Ltd in relation to planning for an urban extension to Weymouth. The 63 ha site was in agricultural use with an old track crossing the northern part of the site north-south, and shown on the OS map of 1880 and the tithe map (1839). The study area was defined as 1.5km radius of the site centre and a site visit was carried out. There were no designated remains in the site area and the nearest Scheduled Monument was on the north-east edge of the study area. There were 30 listed buildings in the study area and a nearby Conservation Area. Previous archaeological work had been carried out in the vicinity. It was concluded that the most significant features likely to be impacted were the trackway running north-south across the northern edge of the site and the 17th and 18th century inclosure boundaries which preserved irregular land divisions typical of former medieval common arable fields.
