Description

A trial trench dug In 1958 C E Bean to investigate finds of Roman pottery and other material in spoil from a Southern Gas Board trunk main trench and on the surface of the adjacent field to the south. This revealed a burnt floor on which was a considerable amount of Samian pottery, most of mid-2nd century date, in a deposit which included burnt peas as well as coarse pottery. Other finds included Greenstone querns, fragments of glass, and roofing tiles of local stone. Similar deposits were found in a trench to the north in Milborne Port parish, and Bean felt that the main part of the settlement was here. Work was stopped by heavy rain.
