Description

A 1:2500 scale digital transcription of all archaeological features visible on aerial photographs in the vicinity of the complex of henges at Knowlton, Dorset. The work was commissioned by Bournemouth University, to be incorporated in a report on the University's multidisciplinary survey programme centerd on the henge complex. The transcription is based on information derived from all specialist oblique and non-specialist vertical aerial photographs of the survey area held by the NMR and CUCAP.The photographic information was digitised and transformed using AERIAL 5, a program devised by John Haigh of Bradford University. The AERIAL files were converted into AutoCAD drawing files for final compilation and editing.Control errors for the main henge complex were less than 2m. Errors for the rest of the survey area vary, but none is greater than 2.5m. All map control was derived from Ordnance Survey 1:2500 paper base maps. The area of survey covers just over 3 square kms, centring on the main henge complex, Knowlton Circles. It extends roughly 1 km to the northeast and 1 km to the southwest to encompass the Northern and Southern barrow cemeteries. The River Allen forms the western boundary, the area being further defined by the edge of St Giles's Park to the north, Matterley Cottages and the Woodlands parish boundary to the south, and Bagman's Copse at the southeastern corner. NRHE & EH refer tp this aerial photograph interpretation event as the Knowlton Circles Project ID: 1340277.
