Description

A coin hoard, pottery etc., possibly a votive deposit, were found shortly before 1875 in the gravel of a former stream-bed, in the village. The hoard of 130 bronze coins ranging from Antoninus Pius to Valens (AD 138-378) was accompanied by Iron-Age, samian, and New Forest pottery, including seven complete pots. An iron spear-head, a bronze wheel-hub, an amber bead and fragments of a bronze shield or scabbard binding were also recovered. The finds, together with notes, are in Dorchester County Museum. The spread of coins within the hoard may indicate votive deposits over time rather than a single deposition.
