Description

NRHE: Two seasons of test pitting undertaken: In 2001 10 test pits were dug at 50m intervals across the northern part of the island and on the higher ground in the west (overlooking causeway SZ 08 NW 8). In 2002 11 test pits were excavated in the Island's central and western areas. Evidence recovered suggests that shale working and iron smelting were taking place on Green Island during later prehistoric and early Roman times. Finds included imported wares suggesting that settlements in the area may have been engaged in cross-channel trade.NGR used approximate. Represents centre of Green Island.
