Description

The Society of Antiquaries undertook an exploratory campaign of fieldwork at Hengistbury Head in 1911-12 under the direction of J P Bushe-Fox. The work continued over six months and comprised the excavation of an area of over 42 acres. A series of narrow trial trenches were dug across Long Field and Barn Field and when archaeology was encountered the trenches were extended to examine the features in more detail. Some 58 separate features of Iron Age and Roman date were identified and described in the final report. These features included hearths, ovens, ditches and areas of ironstone paving. (1) Subsequent re-excavation of some areas has suggested that minor features such as gullies, wall-slots and post holes were not recorded. (4)
