Description

During the watching brief two soakage pits were recorded, measuring 2.60 x 0.70m and 3.0 x 0.70m, to the western side of the proposed development area. Two aditional trial trenches were excavated to dimensions of 19.5m x 1.60m and 6.50m x 1.80m. No archaeological deposits or features were revealed and no artefacts were collected. The works revealed evidence of landscaping and other modern activities sealing remnants of original topsoil and subsoil in the southwest of the site. No archaeological remains of any date were revealed. However, a third trench – located in the closest possible proximity to the known Neolithic features – could not be excavated for safety reasons. Although the works revealed no archaeological features or deposits, there remains the possibility of archaeological survival in the areas beyond the trial trenches.
