Description

A watching brief was conducted my members of AC Archaeology on two separate occasions in November and December of 2021 to a Grade II listed building (Gussage House) to oversee demolition of an existing conservatory in preparation for a new one. Reduction of the site was within the maximum depth of 0.5m below ground level, revealing foundations of the house, in red brick and stone. The historic fabric of the house was also revealed on the eastern doorway, which showed a segmented brick arch comprising of a double row of header bricks. The adjacent opening, now a doorway, likely a former window, appears much altered as wider and taller than originally. The lintel or arched head, has already been removed. No timber framing present in either opening. No artefacts recovered.
