EDO8 - Bowl barrow west of Veiny Cheese Pond, Long Crichel (Piggott 11); excavation 1938

This barrow was excavated in 1938 by S and C M Piggott who found that the mound, which they recorded as 60 feet in diameter and three feet high, was associated with two concentric ditches, suggesting two phases of construction. The inner ditch lay entirely under the mound and was deeper and more carefully cut than the outer ditch, and had cut an earlier pit containing fragments of several beakers. The outer ditch was about five feet outside it. A grave shaft at the centre of the barrow was cut nearly 9 feet into the chalk and contained a primary crouched inhumation associated with pig bones. Pieces of Beaker pottery were found throughout the mound.
