Description

Tony Brown carried out a trial excavation in an area of old clay pits east of the Corfe Castle to Wareham road and south of the mineral railway. He excavated a cist around three feet long by 1 foot wide and 6 to 9 inches deep, and aligned east-west. The cist was constructed of thin slabs of Purbeck stone and lay beneath a compact layer of chalk. A few pieces of Romano-British pottery, a fragment of glass, a few small animal bones (perhaps bird bones) and ain iron arrow head were found in the filling of the cist. Ashy soil beneath the chalk layer contained many sherds of pottery, including pieces of amphora and Samian, and rims of the later 3rd or 4th century AD.
