Description

Holes were dug by contractors in the Quay during 1974. The first, in June 1974, was observed by Mrs J Tennant who saw nothing of archaeological interest in it. The second, in October 1974 was observed by either Hinton or Hodges during a casual visit. This hole was also archaeologically sterile and appeared to comprise recently made up ground. Hinton and Hodges interpret these findings as indicating that the present Quay was built during the post-medieval period. The original quay is likely to have been located on the edge of the gravel terrace behind and to the north of the buildings presently fronting on to the Quay. [1] No details in NMR record.
