Description

During the restoration of the Town Mill, Lyme Regis, a series of archaeological recording events were undertaken on behalf of the Town Mill Trust. In 1992 a series of three test pits were excavated within the mill building and one in the garden as part of a structural survey of the mill building. These revealed the presence of deposits beneath the mill and included the remains of earlier cogwheel pits. The floor within the mill was recorded and three further trenches were excavated in the mill garden and in the stable. A watching brief was undertaken on service trenches in 1995. In 1995-1996 excavation was undertaken in the area between the mill and bakehouse and in the greden west of the mill. Building recording was also undertaken on the mill building and the mill house between 1994-2000.
