Description
In May and June 1994, Wessex Archaeology maintained a watching brief during groundworks at a site formerly used as an oil storage compound and pipeline.
No archaeological features or deposits were noted but test-pitting in the compound showed a sequence of possible reclamation deposits overlying beach deposits. This sequence was not observed further south, where topsoil and sand deposits were noted.
Examination of a series of trenches dug to excavate a pipeline showed make-up or reclamation deposits of chalk, up to 1.50 m deep, possibley sealing foreshore deposits or activities associated with the foreshore. (1)
