Description

Archaeological recording of three trial pits excavated to strengthen piers at The Helmsman Public House was carried out by AC archaeology in March 1997. Two trial pits measured 1m by 1m and the third 3.5m by 1m and all were about 1m deep. All revealed a similar sequence of deposits which appeared to be 18th century and later in date. The pits were excavated at the base of existing pier columns and revealed substantial disturbance by the original insertion of those piers.
