Description

An archaeological watching brief was carried out during the digging of geotechnical test pits and during the digging of footings trenches. These revealed an intermittent thin layer of white sand overlying the natural, which was sealed by a 0.7m-1.0m thick layer of dark soil with a few stones and oyster shell fragments, which was sealed in turn by a 0.3m thick layer of modern debris. This stratigraphic sequence suggests field and/or garden activity until 18th/19th century urban development. (1)
