Description
CKC Archaeology undertook an evaluation of the site of the former Co-op supermarket at 29 South Street, Bridport in 2001. Eight engineer’s trial pits were recorded, supplemented by the excavation of two evaluation trenches. The results indicate that the site had been landscaped and over most of the area natural deposits were exposed directly beneath modern concrete and other deposits. A modern sump was found in Trench 1at the east end of the site adjacent to Folly Mill Lane. A post-medieval well with drystone steyning was found in Trench 6 near the line of the back of the houses on South Street. Another possible undated pit was partially exposed in Trench 4 on the northern side of the site.
Evaluation Trench 9 was excavated along the Folly Mill Lane frontage near the western end of the site. Undisturbed natural deposits were found immediately beneath the modern surfaces. Four pits were found in the western part of the trench - two subrectangular pits dating to the 18th and/or 19th century and two modern pit features further to the east.
Evaluation Trench 10 was excavated parallel to the Town Museum, as close as possible to the street frontage. No archaeological features were encountered.
