Three evaluation trenches were excavated outside the curtain wall. They revealed the moat remained open until the 17th century until gradually filling in, a bridge was identified at the castle's main entrance and the third trench in an area known the 'governor's garden' produced prehistoric flints and evidence of nearby flint-knapping.
